Space - It's a bit big.

Our neighbour galaxy is Andromeda, 700 Kpcs away. Therefore it takes light approximately 2100 years to reach us.

Isn't that amazing?

When we see pictures of this galaxy, we are looking at how it was 2100 years ago when the light was emitted. Don't you find that mind boggling?!?! That light was emitted when the romans were wandering around! It puts it into perspective just how far away even our neighbours are.

If you consider that light travels at 3x10^8 METRES PER SECOND, and has been travelling constantly at this speed, then fuck me is Andromeda far away!

I love the idea, that 2000 years worth of history has passed in the time it has taken for a photon to reach us from that galaxy. 2000 years is a long friggin time but nothing in astronomical terms!
